Chapter Thirty-Two

Jane

I’m confused. How the hell did she obtain a copy of my book? I know my books aren’t hard to obtain. They are available everywhere. She could easily have ordered one and had it delivered, but why my book? Had she heard of me? How? She didn’t follow me on any of my socials, and she did not make a post about my books. She was a fashion lifestyle influencer and didn’t run a bookstagram. I should be happy that someone with her following bought a copy of my book, but I can’t help to feel suspicious. Why me? There are many famous authors whom she could have picked from. Why an indie author? Did she know what happened to me? Had the news reached all the way to the U.S.? Or had Timon told her about me, and she got curious and bought a copy to judge how good of an author I am?

It is after ten when we finish dinner. Austin suggests drinks at the bar, but I want to return to my room, take off this dress, and reflect on this.

‘You go ahead,’ I tell the men. ‘I’m going to our room and lie down for a bit.’

‘It’s only ten,’ Austin says.

‘Are you sure?’ Timon asks.

‘Yes, I’m sure. Go without me. Have fun,’ I tell him. ‘It was nice getting to know you. I hope we do this again,’ I say to Austin.

‘I’m here till next week, any time,’ Austin says.

I smile and head out of the restaurant, where I see Nash and Brandy, who seem to be arguing. She points her finger at him, and he says something to her. She throws her hands in the air, walks out, and he goes after her. Outside, he attempts to take her hand, but she shakes it off, and they go out of sight. I cringe and look away. There are more people in the lobby to check out. At this rate, the resort will be empty with just us, the guests on the floor where Piper was killed. Jamal is by the lifts again, looking over his shoulder, and enters. What is he up to?

I head to the lifts and press the button when Timon calls out my name. I hope he’s not offended by me leaving, but I need to process this. I glance over my shoulder as he jogs towards me.

‘Is everything all right?’ he asks.

‘Yes, all good.’

‘Then why are you being testy?’

‘I’m not testy. I’m just tired.’

He looks at me as if he doesn’t believe me. I puff in my cheeks. It’s better to tell him the truth. I take his hand and make him sit on the chairs in the lobby as people walk past us with their luggage.

‘I found something,’ I begin.

Timon waits for me to elaborate.

‘On Piper’s Instagram,’ I add.

‘Ah, so that's what you have been doing. It wasn’t an email then,’ Timon says.

‘I kind of lied,’ I say coyly.

‘And what did you find?’

‘I zoomed in on one of her photos, and on the bedside table, she had a copy of my book.
